Most moving damage happens before the truck even starts. Items that are wrapped too loosely, boxes that are packed too heavy and gaps that let things shift are the usual culprits. Here is how our packers approach fragile items.
Start with the right materials
- Double-wall boxes for anything heavy or breakable. Single-wall boxes crush.
- Packing paper as the first layer. Newspaper leaves ink on dishes.
- Bubble wrap for glass, ceramics and electronics.
- Dish-pack boxes with cell dividers for glassware.
- Stretch film for drawers and anything with doors.
Glassware and dishes
- Line the bottom of the box with crumpled paper.
- Wrap each glass individually and stand it upright. Glasses are strongest on their rim and base.
- Stack plates vertically like records, with paper between each plate.
- Fill every gap with crumpled paper. If you can shake the box and hear movement, add more.
- Mark the box FRAGILE and THIS WAY UP on two sides.
TVs, mirrors and artwork
Flat items need a flat box or a custom crate. Wrap the screen or glass in a soft blanket, then bubble wrap, then tape a sheet of cardboard over the face. Never lay a TV flat in the truck.
Electronics
Photograph the cables before you unplug anything. Bag screws and cables per device and tape the bag to the item. Use the original box if you still have it.
